Mohammad's story

Mohammed Choudhary is 50 and lives in the West Midlands. Registered as Severely Sight Impaired (SSI), everyday tasks like reading letters or identifying household items can be challenging. But with the help of the Seeing AI app, Mohammed has found new ways to stay independent and confident.

For Mohammed, the app quickly became more than just a tool. Using the camera on his device, Seeing AI reads his post aloud — letters, leaflets, even business cards — giving him immediate access to information without needing to rely on others. He values that the app works without a Wi-Fi connection, meaning the AI runs directly within the app and is always available when he needs it.

The features have opened up new possibilities. Mohammed uses Seeing AI to identify products in the kitchen and around the house, helping him manage daily tasks more easily. The colour detection tool lets him know what clothes he is wearing, adding independence to his routine. The scene description feature helps him understand his environment, whether indoors or outside. And the currency recognition tool has been especially useful, allowing him to identify money notes from around the world — something that once felt impossible without assistance.

There are challenges too. Taking images and having them described isn’t always straightforward, and Mohammed feels the app could improve its image descriptions and make adding photos easier. But these frustrations don’t outweigh the benefits.

Mohammed’s advice to others is simple: start small. Begin with reading text, then practice scanning products to get familiar with the app’s features. With patience, the app becomes a powerful companion.

Looking ahead, Mohammed is clear: he will continue using Seeing AI. For him, it’s not just about convenience — it’s about independence. The app helps him navigate daily life with more confidence, proving that AI can make a real difference in the lives of people with sight loss.
