Research project overview
How do commissioners in adult social care actually use evidence when making decisions that affect people and communities? This important research project explores the reality behind 'evidence-based' commissioning practices.
What we're investigating
Led by Patrick Hall at the University of Birmingham's Health Services Management Centre, under the supervision of Professor Robin Miller, this study examines how commissioners conceptualise and apply different types of evidence in their daily work. We're particularly interested in understanding how practitioners balance empirical research, experiential knowledge, and theoretical insights when making critical commissioning decisions.
Why this matters
While 'evidence-based' commissioning has become a cornerstone of policy, there's limited understanding of how this translates into real-world decision-making. Our research aims to bridge the gap between policy aspirations and practice realities, providing insights that can improve outcomes for adults who use social care services.
Our approach
Through in-depth interviews with commissioners across the West Midlands, we're gathering authentic perspectives on the challenges and opportunities of implementing evidence-informed approaches. Our collaborative methodology includes working with practitioner co-researchers to ensure the study remains grounded in the realities of commissioning practice.
Expected impact
This research will contribute to a better understanding of how evidence can be more effectively integrated into commissioning processes, ultimately supporting improved decision-making and better outcomes for service users. Findings will be shared through academic publications, practice reports, and policy discussions to benefit the wider commissioning community.
