AI Playbook
Foreword
This playbook was co-created with and for people who access social care services and others interested in how AI helps individuals self-manage. It’s about exploring the possibilities of artificial intelligence (AI) — not as something futuristic, but as something already present in our daily lives. Through real stories, practical guidance, and clear values, we want to help everyone feel more confident, informed, and included in the digital world.
We’re grateful to the many people and groups who shared their lived experience, feedback and ideas to shape this resource. It is a living document, and we welcome suggestions for how it can grow and improve.

About This Playbook and How It Was Made
This guide was co-produced by people with lived experience, unpaid carers, professionals, digital leads, and care organisations across the West Midlands. It was developed through workshops and interviews, coordinated by West Midlands ADASS (Association of Directors of Adult Social Services.)
We worked closely with our Co-production Advisory Group and AI Play Book Steering Group, who shaped the structure, language, tone, and content. They helped us ensure that the playbook reflects real needs and offers practical advice based on lived experience.
We also received stories and feedback from people with learning disabilities, physical and sensory impairments, neurodiverse people, family carers and people who use support services. Their experiences are at the heart of this playbook.
This is version 1.0. It will continue to grow and evolve with your input.
